Thanksgiving, I am Thankful for II

Today is Thanksgiving, and I have earlier blogged about how I find the festival interesting and relevant. No and it has nothing to do with Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales on gadgets and friends and relatives coming back from US in December holidays.

The associated tradition with the festival where you have turkey for the meal, I won’t be able to do that due to my vegetarian self. Probably to compensate for the turkey bit I will have some Turkish coffee, which I am sure will more than make up for it. Coming back to being thankful, here is the list for which I have been thankful for a year-

1- Some of the recent changes at the work place and my profile have made it a lot more enjoyable and fun for me. I am thankful for the place I am at my work today which makes me want to go to the office every morning weekday. I hope this positivity continues for the years to come. I am thankful for these changes which made me a better professional.

2- I am thankful for this blog and the friends I have made through the blog, even after a huge gap and complacence on my part there were comments, emails from people on posting of my blog wishing me and my writing well. It feels so blessed to have interacted with such a caring and positive bunch of people in this vast world of internet. If you are reading this, I am thankful for the time and faith you have put in me.

3- I am thankful for the greatest people who thought I was good enough to be friends with them. People who have stood by me through thick and thin, who have supported me, enjoyed with me and are an inseparable part of my life. It is rare to be blessed with such love from people and I am extremely grateful for that.

4- I am thankful for the greatest family in the world. The ‘bestest’ of parents who didn’t disown the son who could put biggest sitcom bloopers to shame. A loving wife who despite the 4 years have managed to live by my side without killing me. An extended family which I can blindly depend upon to take care of things lest something happens to me. I am thankful to be share my life with the most wonderful people.

5- I am thankful for the life I am living, a comfortable and cozy life without having to worry about a lot of basic needs and some luxuries which at most time I take for granted. There is quote by E.E. Cummuings, “The hardest challenge is to be yourself in a world where everyone is trying to make you be somebody else.”; I am thankful for a life where I have the liberty to be myself.

And with this I will be signing off wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. Do share how was Thanksgiving for you?

Love, Friends & A Little Chocolate Cake

I think this commercial totally cuts across the human mindset. I could so much relate to the fact that how we can get so involved with our future aspirations that we always forget to indulge and enjoy the present. The fact that aspirations keep on rising and so does our age; sometimes we find that the time has simply passed and we didn’t even had a glimpse of how it.
Recently I celebrated my 30th birthday, which made me realize that it has been a long time since I have been gracing the mother earth with my esteem presence. I feel that I too have been responsible for trying to run the rat race behind the perfect life. It started from the first position in the class to percentages in the board examinations, lead me to fight for an engineering seat and then an MBA degree. When I thought the fight was over it started all over again for the high paying jobs, better designation, buying a car and a house. And after all that it still continues for a better car, second home, exotic vacations, larger pay checks, and still larger egos. I was wondering is it all that my life has been about? Are these the things which define me, me as an individual as a person? Are these the most significant things in my life?
Surprisingly the answer to all the above questions is a big NO, surprisingly these things are which matter the least. If you have made the right choices and been sincere to what you have done in life, sooner or later all these things fall into the place. What make the life different is how you made the people around you feel, and how the people touched you and your life? The fact that you have felt love and friendship in your life; the feeling where you know with or without the “social perks” you would still be loved and cherished for who you are make all the difference in the world.
I can’t help feeling so blessed and lucky to have felt all of the above in these 30 years. On this birthday, Wifee and my friends planned a surprise where they all will come at 12 in the night to wish me. They meticulously planned almost every detail and people re-arranged their schedule to make it at the right time. Now, being one smart a** that I am, I had already got a whiff and was able to predict almost what was being planned by Wifee & the friends. As soon as they all gathered outside the hall, Wifee had left the door unlatched when everybody dashed in startling me while wishing Happy Birthday. It was such an over whelming moment and a very happy one too. Life is not worth without love & friendship surrounding you to make you feel special.
Though I claimed that it was my instincts and eye for detail that I actually was able to guess they were coming. But one thing which I didn’t confess was that more than the instincts and eye for detail it was my longing and faith in them that helped me do it. I was so sure that neither the Wifee nor my friends would let my birthday go by without making me feel special. I guess it was my anticipation of them as a part of my life and my trust in them, which they not only kept but also pushed it higher than I could have thought, that made me sense their plans.
So there was a bash and a lot of fun, and yes I was not surprised as the Wifee and the friends have expected it. But then sometimes not being surprised can be much more rewarding and comforting than anything else in the world. Having a Wife who would love you beyond you can imagine, having friends who can make a dull evening to a bright sunshine. With pleasures like these life is good and then sometimes we add a little extra chocolate cake to it.

10 Day You Challenge- Day 2: 9 Loves

So day 2 of the 10 day you challenge is to post about 9 loves. Actually when I decided to do this challenge I thought it would be quite simple but as it seems now it wasn’t. I mean there are so many things one loves, and choosing 9 of them is indeed difficult.

1- My Parents, needless to say I am what I am because of them. And how much I love them cannot be described in words.

2- The Wifee since the time we got married ours have been a “give and take” relationship. She generally gives her piece of mind and I seem to be taking it most of the time. Now that I am taking all the pieces of mind (wondering what would happen when she wouldn’t be left with any) and storing them safely in my mind despite all the storage constraints in mine is only because I love her so much.

3- My Friends, now I couldn’t have survived without them. I am lucky to have a very close bunch of friends who I can depend on with my life. I am so thankful to lord, that my paths crossed the way they did and I could collect these pearls of friendship during the journey of my life.

4- My Car – There as in entire post dedicated to my first car. You can read about it here

5- My house– Again there is a post about it if you want to read it in detail here

6- My gadgets, I am a gadget lover I have an Ipod Touch, WII, PSP (recently gifted by Radio Indigo), Home Theatre, Canon Rebel T1i, and the list continues. All of the gadgets are something which I totally love and I can spend hours fiddling with them.

7- Coffee, now my love for coffee has been previous talked about on this blog and some other forums. I actually have a make shift coffee bar at home with an espresso machine, single origin coffees, flavors to enhance coffee and a collection of mugs.

8- My books, the readers of this blog would already know the amount of reading I do and I can assure you that I do not subscribe to a library or a rental service. So for the most part the books I read are purchased and I have a mini library at home. And as with all book lovers I am very possessive about my books.

9- My writing and this blog. All the stuff which I have written in this blog or in my books or outside it, I wrote them because I actually loved writing it. The writing is my way to express and unwind myself. I wouldn’t have been the person I am had it not been for my writing.

So these were the 9 people/things I love. Now on a different note, the narcissist I am it is very difficult not to love myself. So I love myself, for one simple reason I am effin’ awesome. Now those of you planning to debate that please look at the image below, by a “trusted website” who does a facial recognition and matches you to celebrities. I am 53% like George Clooney. So you know I AM AWESOME (readers are requested to conveniently ignore the fact that there is a 55% match with Omar Sharif). So I just need to lose these extra 20 kilos around my waist to become the female magnet what George Clooney is, right people?

How I Got Tricked

I generally have an eye for details and not a person to be fooled or tricked easily. I sense pranks or any conspiracy theory happening around me. But this time the planning was impeccable and very well executed; the result was a jubilant surprise birthday party thrown for me by the Wifee. She being the clever woman she is, planned the party one day before the actual birthday so I am not able to guess it and also the day being Saturday allowed all the guests take time out for the party.

Though as I have been told after the party the planning was going on since many days but I was involved only a week back when my sister in law called me that she had received a complementary couple tickets to a Hindi play happening near our house and if I would be interested to go. Given my liking for the theatre and movies it was highly improbable that I would have refused an offer to watch a play and that was my first step into the well planned trap of the Wifee.

For the second round she conspired with my chaddhy-buddy or langotia yaar as you may call us. He offered full help to her and called me just a day before telling me that he had to discuss something really urgent and couldn’t wait. Since I had already committed to the play and his place was en-route to the theatre I agreed to visit him 2 hours before the play starting time. And with this the perfect window of opportunity was created for me to be out of the house for good four and a half hours.

Now the morning started on an unexpected note, both for me and the wifee. I felt completely sick with the weather allergy and insisted that she drove me to the doctor. With all her plans in place and work to do she had to drive me to the doctor; which consumed 3 hours of her preparation time. But then my illness also ensured that I neglected the deviations from the normal behavior like too many calls and her extra effort in cleaning the house and putting everything in order; which in retrospect connects the dots very well.

By the evening I was running fever and didn’t felt like going anywhere but then I had already committed to the friend and then there was the play also. So I somewhat pushed myself out of the house for the appointments with the wifee as it was planned. My sister in law and mother in law took charge of the house through the spare key which was already shared. I spent some great time with my friends and then went ahead for the play. The play was fabulous and I must mention the actress was really gorgeous. And I digress, more about the play sometime later; now coming back to the story of How I Was Tricked.

So after the play we came back home, while driving inside the society I spotted the cars of my in-laws and some other relatives. I initially ignored them; since my co-brother and sister in law live in the same complex; I thought they might have guests. The unsuspecting me went ahead and parked my own car. While going from the parking to the house I also spotted the car of the friend whose house I had just visited by the time I concluded that there might be something fishy inside the house the Wifee opened the door and amidst the candle light I could see some faint shadows. As soon as I stepped inside the house there was huge bang and shout of “Happy Birthday”. All the lights were switched on simultaneously. When my lights adjusted from the darkness to the bright light I could see this one was a massive party. Almost everyone I and Wifee knew in Bangalore was invited and present. I had an expression of shock, awe and the most childish form of joy. I could spot my school friends, the entire in-laws clan, my buaji and my cousin, our entire gang which went for the New Year party. I was showered with flowers, party poppers and gifts; and finally amidst all this surprise & chaos I went to cut the cake.

Now when the cake is cut there is always some smearing which happens.

And when you yourself are smeared with cake it doesn’t harm to smear others does it? And It’s all the more fun if the one you are smearing are your SILs.

So this was the story when the Wifee managed to trick me the second time, I am sure you understand when was the first time ;-).

However, the end of the party wasn’t as expected. The allergy and fever were consistently rising and create a lot of difficulty for me while breathing. As soon as we bade goodbye to our guests; I had to be rushed to the hospital. There they found that the symptoms had highly accentuated and the oxygen level had gone down. I was immediately admitted oxygen artificial in the hospital. So that’s how my birthday started at 12:00 clock with the mask attached to my nose.

Now that I am out of the hospital and well enough to breath without any medical support, I would like to thank everyone for the wishes. Also I would like to apologies to everyone who called/ smsed/ tweeted/ fbed me on my big day to wish me; I was not able to reply or receive your call due to my condition.  Thanks again for your support and lovely wishes; I plan to live longer as you have suggested and keep bugging you with irritating posts on my blog. Till then enjoy La Dolce Vita.

Discourse from the Prime Ministerial Household

The year 2010 is coming to a close, this year has been a year of achievements amidst disasters. Now given the fact that achievements harbor jealousy, while the disasters harbor jeer, jibes and sarcasm; I believe it would be appropriate to stick to the later while writing this post.

So talking about the disasters I got married early this year which in itself a disaster of the century. This also strikes me out of dating/scoring with any female I know *sigh* and the little thing called wedding ring stuck on my finger makes sure I am repelled by the ones I don’t know *bigger sigh*. Now most of you would be thinking that why I won’t remove the wedding ring and get back to the game. Well the lovely Wifee & the in-laws ensured that I am showered with so much love which coincidentally wrapped in loads of trans-fat leaving a tyre around my waist and the finger so thick that I can’t seem to take out the ring without slicing off my finger.

As I complete my digressions with knick knacks of the Gupta household; 2010 wasn’t only the year of my personal disasters but the entire country joined me in the unprecedented series of disasters. We had the CWG sham scam of 70,000 crores and the 2G Spectrum scam of 1,76,000 crores. I mean I don’t even know how many effin’ zeroes are present in either of those figures. And to top that out the person who is in charge of the cabinet where these scams happened, our beloved Prime Minister Manmohan Singhji (MMS), wants to be Caesar’s wife. As if being Rahul Gandhi’s proxy wife wasn’t enough he also wants to be Caesar’s wife too. My heart goes out for Gursharan Kaur(GK) that she has to go through all this, from what I have heard she is strong valued lady who still manages the MMS household under her tight and able reins.

The word is that the following conversation took place between the PM and his wife last week-

MMS: What is for dinner tonight?

GK: Caesar Salad.

MMS: You are still stuck on the Caesar thing I didn’t mean it literally. It was just a figure of speech.

GK: Yes, Yes as if I don’t know you, one white firangi womam and you become a puppet. 6 years puppeting after Sonia wasn’t enough you find another one that too someone else’s wife

MMS: Oh god! It’s just an idio…m

GK: Don’t you dare call me an idiot, I did a google image search on Caesar and his wife he is some Roman general and his wife is also a pretty blonde.

MMS: Enough of it, why are we having salad? I thought we were supposed to have chicken do pyaza.

GK: At Rs. 70/Kg we cannot afford onions, so chicken do pyaza is cancelled.

MMS: What do you mean we cannot afford onions I am the Prime Minister of the country.

GK: So what? Are you a part of the 2G scam….

MMS: No I am clean and I am above suspicion like the Caes…..and I am ready to appear before the PAC but JPC is not necessary on this particular event.

GK: You are not addressing a press conference or media. I am your wife. So did A. Raja gave you any money?

MMS: No, I think he gave it all to the Karunanidhi family. You know they bought Spice Jet airlines. He is not even from congress no so I hardly have any control over him.

GK: Ok! Did Suresh Kalmadi give you any money, he is from your party?

MMS: No, whatever he gave Rahul ji took it away saying he will use it in Bihar and the rest Suresh kept with himself.

GK: So how do you think we can afford Onions.

MMS: Very true, but I can always ask Sharad Pawar to give us some. I hear that he is hoarding tones of it to keep the prices artificially high.

GK: I am not sure if he will give you any, but yeah If you can ask Sonia to exert some pressure he might cave in. But then if we are found in possession of Onions when the CBI, PAC, JPC or whatever comes to our house they would conclude that you took a cut in all the scams which are coming on TV these days.

MMS: Yes true. Lets have salad, anyways at this age salad is good for health too. I have to keep in good health; given the election results in Bihar from Rahulji, I might get a shot for the third term as a PM if the congress wins the elections again.

GK: Whatever.

Disconnect

Once you are married you practically tend to spend almost all of your available free time in the company of each other. You tend to understand the other person better and enjoy random events which sometimes are absolutely fun.

So the other day me & wifee were driving along the Magrath road in  Bangalore. When out of the blue wifee suddenly shot back with a question/statement “Why on earth is Mac so expensive?”. Now this was an opportunity for someone like yours truly to impress the wifee with knowledge prowess. I mean you don’t leave this opportunity even if you are 10 years into the marriage and for me, I haven’t even completed 10 months.

So I went into details of how the Mac has a different hardware platform and the software which work more efficiently over the machine as compared to the others. I was about to delve into the drawbacks of restrictive hardware access by Mac and Apple. I saw the wifee was looking towards me as if I had just been reincarnated from a different planet.

That was when I realized I was talking about this-

And the wifee was talking about this-

After that I did the most sensible thing a man would do “Shut Up” :

The Coffee In The House

So all of you folks know about my obsession for various gadgets etc and my joy of buying them. I shared with you when I bought my car and I shared with you when I bought this. So it was time for me to buy another gadget which I had my eyes on for a long time. So last week I jumped over the opportunity to get the desired coffee maker for myself and bought this model from Morphy Richards.

For the feedback, the coffee maker works well and makes a good espresso and cappuccino. I also got a Costa Rica Beans for brewing for my espresso. Here are some pics of my first few coffees from the new coffee maker and the coffee brewed on my own coffee maker.

Firstly this is the machine that I bought, though had some other models from Inalsa, & Lavazza but Inalsa was too crude (as a matter of fact there was another stripped down version of Morphy Richards where you could not control the strength of the brew which also was too crude thought a bit cheaper) and Lavazza was very expensive priced around Rs. 9,000.  So this is the model which yours truly & the wifee decided to pick up.

Once all the equipment was setup and cleaned, I added the coffee to the filter and water in the machine. Saying my prayers I finally switched it on, after a minute and a half, the espresso started pouring in the kettle.

Finally after full 3 minuted we had a kettle full of Espresso ready and though I wanted to immediately pour it down my throat, wifee gave me the “Do Not Touch It” look and took some warmed milk for the cappuccino.

Now we poured the milk and the espresso in the mugs, leaving space for the froth to be formed. Then we steamed the mixture in the mugs to generate the froth over the coffee. Generating froth is a bit tricky, specially in a small mug the coffee tends to spill around, inviting you are so dead look from the wifee. This is how the nozzle looked after we had steamed for making the froth.

and after all the steaming and a bit of mess which wifee cleaned up, this is what I can proudly present as the coffee made by me 🙂

Chilling At The Unwind Island

I have become one of the believers in the art of chilling, so when I got the invite for my first Fosters’ art of chilling parties in Bangalore, I was more than over joyed. My earlier experiences in Pune art of chilling parties only suggested one thing that I freeze my schedule for Sunday afternoon to make it to the Fosters’ party.

Though every Fosters party had been a different experience, this one was quite different from the others. While the last time we had an entire gang who were having awesome fun, but all that is history. I changed cities, left my fun loving gang which used to make the parties so much fun, I was really skeptical if I would be enjoying this party as much.

But this time I had Wifee along with me, made some new friends and enjoyed an awesome party. The fosters art of chilling this time too stood for what it means to me, an awesome time and an unforgettable evening.

Awards

So friends this has been a season of awards, I was nominated for Avant Garde Blogger awards. The final results have been out and as I have been told, I have secured the place amidst esteemed bloggers for being the blogger whose rant is second most interesting.

Now coming back to basics I am a tad too confused, if I should be happy that I won an award or be sad that I am recognized as some who would rant a lot. Given the fact the crazy bloke I am, I choose to be happy and shout Yay!!!!

So this is the batch I got as an award-

Now Monika also awarded me here with this Cherry on the Top award. The rules to receive this awards are –

2. Copy the award and put it on your blog.

Okay so going in line with the rules, Thanks a lot Monika, you absolutely raowck!!!!! Here are 3 things I love about myself.

2- I love that I am an avid reader, I have grown to a better and a more self-aware person all courtesy my reading habit.
